Why Your Curls Aren't Listening to You: The Science of Porosity (and the Detox They're Begging For)

By Olivia Joy | Curly Hair Specialist

You just deep conditioned. You used good products. You did everything right — and yet your curls are still frizzy, dry, and completely uncooperative. Sound familiar?

‍ ‍

Before you blame your products, your technique, or your hair itself, I want to talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention in the curly hair world: porosity. More specifically, why yours might be way more out of whack than you realize — and why a simple detox could be the plot twist your curls have been waiting for.

‍ ‍

So, What Exactly Is Hair Porosity?

‍ ‍

Here's the science in plain English. Every strand of your hair is covered in a cuticle — think of it like tiny overlapping shingles on a roof. These shingles control how easily moisture enters and exits your hair shaft. That's porosity.

‍ ‍

There are three categories:

‍ ‍

Low porosity — the cuticle shingles are tightly closed. Products tend to sit on top of the hair rather than absorbing in, making curls feel coated or weighed down. Hair takes forever to get wet and forever to dry.

‍ ‍

Normal (medium) porosity — the cuticles are balanced. Moisture gets in and stays in. Products work the way they're supposed to. This is the dream.

‍ ‍

High porosity — the cuticle is raised or damaged, often with gaps. Moisture absorbs quickly but escapes just as fast. Hair feels dry almost immediately after you style it, and frizz is a constant battle.

‍ ‍

Here's the thing: most curly-haired people assume they have one porosity type and leave it at that. But the truth is, your porosity can change — and it's often being held hostage by something you'd never suspect.

‍ ‍

The Real Reason Your Porosity Is "Off"

‍ ‍

If your curls have been especially difficult lately — products not absorbing, definition falling flat, that dull, dry, almost waxy feeling no matter what you do — the culprit is likely buildup.

‍ ‍

And I'm not just talking about product buildup, though that's absolutely a factor. I'm talking about:

‍ ‍

  • Hard water mineral deposits (calcium, magnesium, iron) that coat the cuticle and physically block moisture from entering

  • Silicone and heavy oil residue from conventional products that create a film your conditioner literally cannot penetrate

  • Chlorine and oxidative buildup from pools, well water, or color services that roughen and lift the cuticle over time

‍ ‍

When any of these coat your strands, it doesn't matter how good your curl cream is. It's like trying to moisturize skin covered in saran wrap. The porosity you think you have? It might just be a layer of gunk in disguise.

‍ ‍

This is especially true if you've had any lightening or color services. Chemical processes are already doing a number on the cuticle — and add hard water or buildup on top of that, and you've got a real problem.

‍ ‍

The Fix: Your Curls Need a Detox

‍ ‍

This is where Malibu C comes in, and honestly it's one of my favorite tools in my toolkit.

‍ ‍

For general product and mineral buildup, I reach for Malibu C Undo-Goo. It's a gentle clarifying treatment specifically formulated to remove residue without stripping the hair of everything good. Think of it as a reset button — it clears the slate so that everything you put on after actually works.

‍ ‍

If you swim regularly or live in an area with heavy chlorine or mineral exposure, Malibu C Crystal Gel (their swimmer's treatment) is your new best friend. It neutralizes and removes chlorine and oxidative buildup that's basically aging your strands from the inside out.

‍ ‍

The difference after a Malibu C treatment is not subtle. Clients come in telling me their hair "feels like itself again" — that's not a coincidence. That's what happens when the cuticle can actually function the way it's supposed to.

‍ ‍

After the Detox: Feed Your Curls the Good Stuff

‍ ‍

Once you've cleared the buildup, your hair is in prime condition to actually receive nourishment — and this is when product quality matters most.

‍ ‍

My ride-or-die for this phase (and honestly, all phases) is Innersense Organic Beauty. Their entire line is formulated without silicones, parabens, or sulfates, which means you're not re-creating the buildup problem you just solved. Clean, plant-based ingredients that actually penetrate and support the hair structure.

‍ ‍

Their I Create Lift Volumizing Foam and Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner are staples in my routine and in my salon. They work with the hair's natural behavior rather than coating it into submission. Post-detox, you'll feel a difference in how the products absorb and how your definition holds.

‍ ‍

This combination — detox with Malibu C, nourish with Innersense — is genuinely one of the most transformative things I do for clients. It's not complicated. It's just the right sequence.

‍ ‍

How to Know If This Is You

‍ ‍

Ask yourself: when did I last clarify my hair (not just shampoo — actually clarify)? If the answer is "never" or "I don't remember," your porosity is almost certainly not performing at its potential.

‍ ‍

Signs your hair is overdue for a detox:

‍ ‍

  • Products feel like they're not absorbing

  • Curls look dull even right after wash day

  • Hair feels "coated" or slightly tacky

  • More frizz than usual despite using the same products

  • Curl pattern looks less defined, almost limp

‍ ‍

Sound like you? Book a consultation — I can assess your hair in person and create a plan that actually works for your curl pattern and history. Porosity isn't a life sentence. With the right reset, your curls can feel like themselves again.
